The Firefighter 1 Fire Academy at Heartland Training (El Cajon) trains pre-employment students in a 14-week, 10.5 unit California State Fire Marshal (CSFM), Accredited Fire Academy that is operated in conjunction with Southwestern College. The course is divided into 2 parts. The "Firefighter I" coursework comprises 206 of the required 398 hours of total training necessary to certification. Applicants who pass this portion of the course can move on to obtain "Firefighter II" certification, which is necessary to work as a career firefighter in Florida.
