How Long Should a Short Film Be? My September One-Year Filmmaking students are screening their thesis films this week and, once again, this issue of length has come up. Although we recommend that students keep their films to 10-15 minutes, many of my students have made films that are 20-25 minutes.

Having said that, very rarely that happens on a short film (your question is specific to that) so I would say that the average short, assuming a length of 12–15 min, will probably be shot over 4/5 days average, even though I have shot short films that had a two weeks filming schedule.

Any film shorter than 50 minutes qualifies as a short film for the Sundance Film Festival, while any film with a run-time under 40 minutes is eligible for the shorts categories at the Academy Awards. The longest of the ten movies nominated for either best live-action or best animated short at the 83rd Academy Awards is The Gruffalo, at 27 minutes.

There are of course specialist short film festivals as well, but lets' treat them separately as they aren't usually the prestigious film festivals we all lust after. If the festival programs shorts ahead of a feature, then anything longer will generally mean they can't turn around the films and the cinema before the next session has to start.
